Here is the idea of a colony, perhaps the first such instance in history, of a colony, at the height of the empire underwhich it was ruled, having leaders, LaFontaine and Baldwin, who say no to violence as a means of achieving independence. Later Gandhi would use and develop non-violence as a tactic in South Africa and then India.
